In it’s conception in 1847, CUNY’s mission has been to offer an affordable, high quality education to the people of NYC. But in August of 2008, $50.6 million was cut from CUNY’s proposed budget. In November, Governor Paterson announced cuts of $348 million to CUNY and SUNY, and proposed that CUNY tution would go up $600 dollars annually. Many courses are now being cut at CUNY and adjuncts are being laid off. These courses often include electives in many departments as well as ethnic and gender studies which are mostly taught by adjuncts. This threatens the foundations of CUNY’s mission, leaves many teachers out of work, and many students without the means for an education.
The purpose of this site is to provide up-to-date information on issues and events pertaining to the proposed budget cut and tuition raise on our city’s school system. As a student at Brooklyn College, I have began gathering the information I receive here to share it with other students
Initially, this site was intended to inform students at Brooklyn College and keep our community updated on issues and events. However, as this movement unfolds, I have begun to hear a need for a stronger relationship between students at all CUNY campuses. I hope that this website will be of use to any interested participants. Please follow the page headings on the right to find out more about the budget cut, and how you can help keep CUNY an affordable and quality university.
